In 2021, three-year projects of individual research groups supported by the Foundation in 2019, were completed. The terms of those grant agreements provided for the extension of the projects for a period of one to two years. Within the framework of competitive renewal, 321 projects received funding extension (in 2021 – 218). The size of one grant will be up to 7 million rubles annually (in 2021 - up to 7 million).
“The national research community had fears that in the course of reshuffling the activities of development institutions in Russia last year, the financial support for competitive research funding would be reduced. This has not happened. The Russian Science Foundation promised that funding for basic research projects (the “a” competition of the RFBR) would continue both through the introduction of a new line-up of small scale projects by the Russian Science Foundation and through the expansion of support for individual research groups. The RSF keeps improving success rates that are now about 25% across various scientific disciplines. The Foundation is also ready to announce the next calls for proposals and additional funding initiatives shortly in mid-April,” Andrey Blinov, RSF Deputy Director General, commented the outcome of competitive selection and future prospects.
