RSF Director General visits Paris

On April 1, Director General of the Russian Science Foundation Alexander Khlunov visited the headquarters of the French National Research Agency (ANR) where he held a working meeting with the ANR President and CEO Thierry Damerval. During the meeting, the partners summed up the application campaign of the first joint call for proposals launched last year in the field of mathematics and physics, and discussed plans to launch further competitions in various fields of basic sciences.

“The investigators of Russian-French research teams have submitted in total over 50 joint proposals that will be reviewed by their peers in our countries. Undoubtedly, this indicates a high mutual interest in cooperation from the outstanding scientists in both countries, and it even somewhat exceeds our initial expectations from the first joint call”, the head of the Russian Science Foundation noted during the talks.

Since joint RSF-ANR call is a yearly funding opportunity for the researchers in France and Russia, the parties agreed to define specific research domains for the next call by the end of June. It is expected the next call will be announced in September this year with results published in fall 2020.

While in Paris, Alexander Khlunov also attended the Research Agency Leaders Symposium organized by OECD Directorate for Science, Technology and Innovation on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the OECD Global Science Forum. Besides the heads of RSF and ANR, the participants of this event included Stan Gielen (Chairman of the Board, NWO, Netherlands), Enrique Playan Jubillar (Director General, AEI, Spain), Mark Ferguson (Director General, Science Foundation Ireland), John Arne Røttingen (CEO, National Research Council, Norway), Hidetoshi Kotera (Executive Director, RIKEN, Japan) and other senior leaders with strategic responsibility in research funding.

The aim of this symposium was to freely discuss what is considered to be the main future challenges for the integrity of science and research workforce in the changing world and what needs to be done to address them.
